Routines can help you maintain function, reduce stress, and improve sleep. Developing routines early in life will set you up for success because you will be more productive and feel more focused. Forming good daily habits will allow for a better quality life in your elderly years. This helps aging adults feel a greater sense of control and more independence at a time when mental and physical health starts to decline. Overall this will allow for a happier healthier life.


Every daily routine should include 7-9 hours of sleep with waking up and falling asleep at the same time each day. This will actually help you sleep better at night and allows the body to get into a circadian rhythm. Our body and mind will begin to function more efficiently and keep us energized throughout the day.


Upon waking, before reaching for the phone, you should engage in a short mindful meditation. This can be a simple breathing exercise that calms your mind and allows you to set the intentions for your day. You could also engage in a simple gratitude practice. I wake every morning and say a prayer to God, thanking him for the blessings in my life. If you immediately reach for your phone, you may see a text, email or post that causes you stress and your day could turn out very different than you intended it to.


A nutrient dense diet is also essential for health and longevity. We have many systems in our body that require specific nutrients to maintain function. And there are many popular foods that create disease in our body. Two of the top causes of death among Americans, cancer and heart disease, are diet related. Many people do not get enough minerals from their food choices. A plant based diet is the best option to ensure the intake of vital nutrients the body needs for daily functions.


Just like brushing your teeth, having a cup of coffee or tea, eating breakfast, showering up, going to class or work is all a part of your daily routine, EXERCISE or SELF CARE practices should also be incorporated. Find time to schedule in some mobility, flexibility and strengthening exercises for optimal health and wellness.
