Backbends help counteract the stresses of our daily unsupported forward bending postures that contribute to rounded shoulders. Whether we are eating, driving, working at a computer, performing chores or gardening, we are spending the majority of our day bent forward.
Too much forward bending can contribute to bad posture, neck and back pain, restricted blood flow to vital organs, and can even have negative effects on our mood and self-esteem.
What more convincing do you need to back bend on a daily basis?
BKS Iyengar recommended that back bends were a cure for depression. There has also been research linked to backbends producing our bodies' natural pain killers and the lowering of gray matter in the brain.
